Who is behind this site, where we are, and how to reach us.
This page says who is behind skeletonfiles.com and how to reach us. Skeleton Files is a one-person genealogy research business run by James Duncan from Spring, Texas, in the United States. Payments on this site are handled by Stripe, and the site is hosted by Cloudflare. The rules for buying a package are on the terms page, how we handle your information is on the privacy page, and how refunds work is on the refunds page.
Skeleton Files is operated from Texas, United States. The person you email is the person who does the research.
Email is the way to reach us: hello@skeletonfiles.com. Use it for questions about a package, your case, an invoice, this site, or your personal data. Requests about your personal data, such as access, correction or deletion, are answered within 30 days. The privacy page lists your rights.
If you have a complaint, email us first and say so. We will try to settle it with you directly.
Payments are processed by Stripe, Inc. (Stripe's privacy policy). When you pay, you enter your card details on Stripe's own checkout page. Card numbers never touch our site. Later payments, such as milestones and balances, are invoiced by email through Stripe. Prices are in US dollars. We do not collect sales tax. What you pay and when is on the terms page; how refunds work is on the refunds page.
This site runs on Cloudflare (Cloudflare's privacy policy). Cloudflare Workers serve the pages and the checkout, Cloudflare R2 holds the files you upload until they are copied into your private case file, and Cloudflare Email Routing delivers mail to hello@skeletonfiles.com. Cloudflare is a United States company with a global network. Data is processed in the United States. Our own pages set no cookies. The privacy page explains what is collected and why.
This site links to other sites: Stripe for payment, Ancestry.com for DNA kits and trees, the archives whose records we cite, our YouTube channel, and others. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for what they publish or how they handle your data. Their own terms and privacy policies apply. Ancestry.com in particular is a separate service that you use under your own account, under Ancestry's terms and privacy statement. If a link on this site is broken or leads somewhere it should not, tell us at hello@skeletonfiles.com and we will fix it.
The public case files on this site are historical investigations with no living clients. We never publish living people. Client cases are never published or listed here, and we describe a case publicly only with the client's written permission.
The historical records we quote are public records held by archives, libraries and government offices. They belong to no one. We quote them as they were written, with the spellings, dates and mistakes of their time, and we say which record each claim rests on. Our conclusions are based on the evidence we found, and a new record can change a conclusion. If you think we have something wrong, email us; we check every correction against the record itself.

What you receive as a client is yours to use for personal, family and non-commercial purposes under a perpetual license. The terms page has the details.
This site is operated from Texas, United States, and Texas law applies. If something goes wrong, email us first; we will try to settle it informally. If that fails, disputes go to the courts of Texas. If you are a consumer in another country, nothing here reduces the protections your own law gives you.
